Sparknotes- High School students will find 100 classic literature selections, each containing sections on context, characters,

Addressing the Literacy Needs of Emergent and Early Readers- This document contains the latest research for reading. Find guidelines for teaching, examples, and lots more.

National Center for Education- Home Literacy Activities- This PDF report presents information on the extent to which families
are engaged in literacy activities with their 3- to 5-year-olds who are not yet enrolled in kindergarten. It also presents information on signs of children's emerging literacy, such as whether children recognize letters, can write their own names, or read or pretend to read.

Teacher’s Resources- Bantam Double Day Publishing maintains this wonderful site for teachers. It contains a multitude of resources useful in the classroom. Find new ways to teach award winning books, teacher's guides to teaching thematic units, or find links to top literature/ education associations. Search for your favorite piece of literature, too!

Score- Language Arts- Teachers will find language arts resources, California language standards, and cyberguides, supplementary complete units of instruction centered on core works of literature. This is a great resource!

Books and Literature

Absolute Whootie, Stories to Grow By- This is a collection of Fairy and Folk Tales, complete with lessons and techniques for lessons development. It contains great ideas for the new and inexperienced elementary teacher.

Cinderella- This project asks students to evaluate various versions of  Cinderella  and present information to lower grade classrooms.

The Farm Unit- Using the topic "farm", this unit has a whole language approach, in which children's literature is the foundation. Big books and shared reading activities fill this very detailed and complete K-2 unit. 

Book Adventure- Registering for free from home or school, elementary students can track their reading progress, find books, and win prizes at this Sylvan sponsored site. 

Mr. G's English Lessons and Links- Here is a great resource for teaching English Comp high school classes, complete with links, methods, and homework. 

Handbook for Storytellers- This site helps anyone improve their skills; learn how to choose, tell, and present a story lesson.

Children Book Authors Who Visit Schools- This is an alphabetical listing of authors, title of their work and links to the author's webpage.

Turner Movie Classics-By the Book- This site provides middle and high school educators with cost-free curriculum materials to assist them in teaching great works of literature by introducing students to the classic movies which have been adapted from these works.

ReadingLady.com- This is an online resource for educators seeking to interact with other educators as they expand their
understanding of literacy teaching. 

Stories From the Web- This site is where young students can read stories, email authors, write reviews and even write their own stories. This is a good resource.

Berenstain Bear Country- After reading some of the books take your primary students on a tour of the tree house, solve Sister's secret message, visit the library or e-mail the family.

Beatrix Potter- Great for elementary students, this site contains character and author information, news, art and more.

Alice in Wonderland- Here are some fun and engaging activities to be played during or after reading the book. Classes integrating across the curriculum can use Mathematics with Alice,Puzzles and Games,  Writing Activities. The Lewis Carroll Academic Information provides project, teaching aids, tools, and more.

Frankenstein- Links, information and books associated with Frankenstein are found here. This site is full of information.

Myths and Legends- The information is organized by country. This site contains tons of great myths and legends, appropriate for any level.

Theodore Tugboat- This animated site is ideal for younger kids. While learning about the harbor, they can enjoy interactive stories, coloring books, sounds and movies.

Mysterynet.com- This huge site, containing links, discussions, information and reviews related to mystery stories, also has a kid's area and lessons for teachers.

The Moonlit Road- Here are ghost stories and folktales form the American South, accompanied by real-audio narrations. Students ages 10 and older can learn about the Southern culture.

The Case.com- Containing a new mystery every week, this Site allows kids and adults a chance to solve a mystery. Find mysterious photo contests, 5 minute mysteries, and daily twist at this neat site. The case.com for kids area includes lessons and activities for the classroom.

The Children's Literature Web Guide- This is a full resource for parents and teachers that offers tons of information and links associated with children's literature. It's a great site.

The Grapes of Wrath- Steinbeck's classic novel is condensed chapter by chapter, includes maps, pictures and information that could be used in any high school literature class.

Charlotte's Web- A second grade class made this site containing chapter summaries, puzzles, quizzes, links, teacher resources and more.

Animal Farm-  Comprehension Test, and Lessons/Activities are  great high school resources for teaching George Orwell's Animal Farm. 

To Kill a Mockingbird- Vintage High School presents this high school collaborative project related to this classic book. San Diego Office of Ed. offers great classroom activities associated with "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Of Mice and Men- Teacher Cyberguide- contains great links and activities for supplemental work. Of Mice and Men chapter questions are here. A full study unit for Mice and Men grade 9-12 is found at Media Weaver. This student Survival Guide assists students with chapter definitions and clarification.

Anne Frank Online- This is an exhibit and educational resource for high school. Anne Frank site contains activities, history, and quizzes. This Internet Lesson Plan contains a 12th grade lesson and links.

Sarah Plain and Tall- This page contains 24 lessons appropriate for grades 3-6, one for each chapter.

A New Coat For Anna- The unit relating to the book contains links and related activities, integrating language arts with social science: using map skills; contrasting communities, cultures and daily lives.

Something Fishy- Young elementary students will find an online version of "The Owl and the Pussycat" and then have some great activities as a follow-up.

Hootie Owl's Stories to Grow By- Designed for children 5-10 years old,this Site is an extensive collection of stories and folk tales from around the world. They are organized by type of story, theme, and country of origin; descriptions include age level appropriateness.  This is a good resource!

Internet Public Library Storyhour- See graphics, hear text and find great stories of young children here. This would be great for integrating fairy tales and other stories for primary classes.

The On-Line Books Page- This is a searchable database of full text versions of thousands of books.

Books A to Z- Here is a great resource for high school students interested in learning the steps necessary for publishing  a book, from layout and printing to marketing.

Rolando's Children Stories- Designed for preschoolers, this Site contains colorful, easy to read stories about animals.

Digital Library Collections- Students can access the New York Public Library to read entire books, download video clips, sounds and graphics that will help them complete research assignments.

Just for Kids Who Love Books- Children's book reviews, author's birthdays and biographies, how a book is made and more can be found at this great site for elementary and older students.

Economic and Geography Lessons for 32 Children's Books- This site provides detailed cross curriculum lessons plans that are tied into children's literature. This is great!

Concordances of Great Books- Over 200  pieces of classic literature are available to search for words contained within each, listing the words and the context to which they are used. This is useful for high school vocabulary study.

Webtime Stories-  This is a collection of the Web's best online stories that include graphics and sound. Shakespeare-   Language Arts instructors will find resources and tips for teaching Shakespeare to their students. Here is everything you need to begin teaching Shakespeare. It's appropriate for all age groups and most academic areas!

Fluency Through Fables- Fables are available, accompanied by comprehension questions, discussion ideas and more. This is useful as a teacher centered activity at the front of the class, especially for teaching ESL to adults. 

Aesop's Fables- Twenty fables, written and illustrated by college students, can be found here.
